In Starfield, you can join the Freestar Rangers faction. This page of the guide contains a walkthrough of its first proper mission - Deputized. We explain e.g. how to meet Emma Wilcox and complete the mission from the board, how to collect the Freestar Rangers' gear, how to follow the bandits' tracks, how to deal with the thugs and how to obtain the slate with the message.

Unlocking the quest line of the Freestar Rangers faction

1. You can start the Freestar Rangers storyline in their headquarters - the Akila city on the planet with the same name in the Cheyenne system.
2. You will reach the Akila city quite early in the main storyline, during The Empty Nest mission. The bank robbery mission will start automatically in the city - this one's called Job Gone Wrong. It is classified as a faction mission in the journal, although it is required to advance further in the main plot.
3. After dealing with the bank robbery situation in any way, Sheriff Daniel Blake will tell you about the possibility of joining the Freestar Rangers faction. Stay in the Akila city and visit The Rock - it's the biggest building.

Speaking with Emma Wilcox and completing the activity

1. At the faction's headquarters, go to the bar to talk to Emma Wilcox. Tell her that you want to join the Freestar Rangers.
2. You must complete a trial mission - find the mission board in the same room. The list includes random activities, e.g. catching a fugitive hiding on a planet, rescuing a hostage or destroying a ship or a group of enemy ships. Choose and complete at least one of them.

Speaking with Sheriff Blake and taking the oath

1. After completing the mission, return to Emma Wilcox and then follow her to the sheriff's office.
2. Take the oath and Daniel Blake will give you a sheriff's badge, a sheriff's outfit (you don't have to wear it during this faction's missions), a Deadeye revolver and ammunition.

Reaching the Waggoners' farm

1. Talk to Emma about the first full-fledged assignment. Emma will join you for this mission (as an extra second companion).
2. Reach the planet Montara Luna in the Cheyenne system. Choose the farm on the planet's map. The person you need to talk to at the farm is Mikaela Waggoner.

Following the bandits by their tracks

1. Near Mikaela you will find footprints. Turn on the hand scanner. The arrows appearing on the ground can lead you towards the canyon where you will find the next tracks.
2. A few monsters may appear along the way, so try not to stray too far from the main path. In addition, you may encounter trap mines (they quickly jump away before they explode) and turrets (use good weapons and lean out from behind the cover for short moments).

Confronting the bandits

1. The traces lead to the bandits' camp - you will talk with their leader.
2. All dialogue options lead to a battle with the thugs. Use the covers, pay attention to the radar indications and use Emma's help.

Obtaining and reading of the slate

1. After the fights are over, search the bandit leader's corpse. Among the items you will find a "Job's Done" slate. Open your inventory, go to the notes category and read it.
2. Talk to Emma Wilcox and show her the slate. Also return to the farm to talk to Mikaela again and tell her that the problem has been solved.
3. Emma will stop following you and you will complete the mission. You receive XP and 7,300 credits. The next faction quest, Where Hope is Built, will begin.
