  1. Unlocking and upgrading skills is the primary way your character grows stronger. Each level up rewards you with a skill point. You can spend it on a new skill or upgrade an already owned one.
  2. The game doesn't let you reset your skills, that is, respec your character. Every skill point you spend is gone for good and can't be recovered in any way.

Saving up skill points

You can partially circumvent this issue by following these useful tips - Starfield: Can you reset skills (respec)? - Character development and team - Starfield Guide

You can partially circumvent this issue by following these useful tips:

  1. Always try to have at least one point in reserve - each skill has challenges assigned to them, such as lockpicking a certain number of containers. Completing the challenge lets you purchase the next rank of the skill, upgrading it. If you have a skill point stashed away, you can do so immediately. You won't need to wait for your next level up and you'll be able to take on more difficult challenges right away.
  2. We recommend using this technique for important interactions with the environment and other characters, such as Security (lockpicking), Theft (stealing from NPCs) and Persuasion (convincing them to your point of view).
  3. Save the game before purchasing a new skill - try to test it our right away. If you don't like it or find it unhelpful, reload and spend the skill point on something else.
