Cities: Skylines 2 is Powered by Unity; Players Convinced That's Good News

Although many gamers would have welcomed Cities: Skylines 2 powered by Unreal Engine 5 with open arms, the news of the use of the venerable Unity did not disappoint fans at all - quite the contrary.

The excitement generated by the official announcement of Cities: Skylines 2 is slowly subsiding. So the time has come for a cold analysis of the next installment of the best0selling city-building simulator from Paradox Interactive. This time, fans examined the technical layer of the game's trailer (watch it below).

The great-looking video, in the opinion of some players, was created on Unreal Engine 5, and this, according to them, would prove that Cities: Skylines 2 is also based on the modern technology from Epic Games (even though the video does not show the game as such). These rumors were immediately debunked by the developers, who stated that the simulator is being powered by same Unity engine that was used to create the first installment.

Can we therefore speak of a disappointment? Not necessarily. A heated debate, during which many Internet users presented positive aspects of Colossal Order remaining with the current technology.

  • One of the most important arguments is simply the excellent knowledge of the said engine among the developers. As a result, they do not have to start from scratch, so to speak.
  • Another advantage of using Unity is ease of transfer for existing resources from Cities: Skylines. Since the collection of DLCs is huge, this is quite the advantage for developers.
  • Some players also note that while UE5 is a powerful tool for creating worlds in which we can move around in a third-person perspective, it fails as a technology for simulation games with heavy emphasis on the use of mods.
  • Speaking of which, there were several comments in the discussion insisting that Unity is better for creating modifications than Unreal Engine 5, which is more complicated in practice.
  • Original Cities: Skylines is essentially a very successful game, and fans argue that the series does not need a revolution, but more of an evolution. Switching from Unity to UE5 could shatter what players have come to love the game for.
  • Moreover, using Unreal Engine 5, according to players, would entail much higher system requirements than those that we will potentially experience in Cities: Skylines 2 on Unity.

Of course, not being a programmer, it is difficult to judge the superiority of one technology over another. Nevertheless, aspects such as developers' familiarity with the Unity engine are its undeniable advantages. And will it live up to our expectations? We will find out at the earliest when the developers provide us with the first gameplay from Cities: Skylines 2 (and preferably the game itself).

Below you can watch the trailer from which the aforementioned discussion began.

Finally, let us remind you that Cities: Skylines 2 will be released on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. At the time of writing this news, the exact release date is unknown - however, it is known that the game will be released this year. The title will be available with a Game Pass subscription.
