Shortcuts are a popular element of soulslike games and you can also look for them in Lords of the Fallen 2023. In our guide, we explain how to unlock the first shortcut next to Marc Axe's Remains and how to open more new passages.

In Lords of the Fallen, you can look for opportunities to create shortcuts and open new permanent passages. Our guide describes how to unlock the first shortcut adjacent to the Vestige of Marco the Axe resting point and how to create passages later in the campaign.

Unlocking the first shortcut

1. A shortcut system is featured in Lords of the Fallen and it works on a similar basis to other soulslike games. By creating new shortcuts, you can more easily travel between adjacent areas, e.g. to reach a specific location or a boss lair faster.
2. Unlocking the first shortcut is part of the progression in the game's main storyline, but subsequent shortcuts may be optional and easy to miss.
3. After finding a place to rest and save called Vestige of Marco the Axe, you will reach the large vertical plank shown in the picture. Like a raised drawbridge, it prevents passage further.

1. You need to explore the left path, which leads to a body of water. The main character cannot dive, but you can travel to the world of Umbral.
2. In the world of the dead, a new lower path will be created for you to explore. Using it will lead you to a long ladder.

1. After using the ladder, you will be able to return to the world of the living. You will find yourself on the other side of the vertical plank.
2. Before you move on, you should kick down the plank after standing next to it (picture above). This action will unlock the first shortcut. From now on, you can walk over the fallen plank and there is no obligation to use the lower passage in Umbral.

Ladders and new passages

Other shortcuts from the game may be:

1. Ladders that can be lowered - You need to reach the upper ledge, and after approaching the ladder, you will be given the option to push it (example in the picture). The ladder will slide down and from then on you can climb it.
2. Other environmental puzzles - solving a given puzzle (e.g. unlocking an elevator, passing through another section of Umbral) can create a new passage.

1. Doors or gates closed on one side - after receiving the message, you must reach the same passage from the other side. This will unlock it.
2. Doors or gates requiring a key - after interacting with the passage, you will find out what type of key is needed (example in the picture). You must return to that locked passage after finding or purchasing the matching key. An open passage may lead to a known place or to a completely new location.
