Starfield has an extensive character creator. In the guide, we described all its tabs and the main options for customizing the appearance and naming the protagonist.

The character creator will allow you to make the perfect hero in Starfield. From this page of the guide, you will learn how to unlock the character creator, what are all the main tabs of the creator, and also how to name your own character. We also answer whether all your choices in the creator are final.

How to unlock the creator?

1. The creator does not appear immediately after starting the game. You must first play through a few minutes of a very linear prologue. This is the first main mission, One Small Step.
2. The hero will reach a mysterious artifact and lose consciousness for a moment after examining it. After regaining your senses, you will talk to Lin and Heller. When trying to remember yourself who you are, you will go through all the steps of the creator.

Step 1 - Biometric identifier

1. The first tab of the creator allows you to preliminarily determine the appearance of your character. You can switch between the suggested faces. They will serve you as a base in the next two tabs.

Step 2 - Body type

1. In the second tab, you can choose your body type and walking style - more masculine or feminine.
2. The circle allows you to adjust the body type. The protagonist can be, for example, thinner or more muscular, or a combination of both.
3. You can also choose the skin color in the bottom slider.

Step 3 - Face

1. This is the most extensive tab, where you can customize every detail of the face. These include the shape of the head, hairstyle, hair color, nose shape, eye color, or scars on the body. Each element is selected from a separate slider.

Step 4 - Past

1. The fourth tab allows you to choose the hero's past from among several predefined ones. Every origin offers 3 starting skills - they will have the lowest first rank.
2. Don't worry about missing skills depending on the past. You can unlock each skill later in the game by spending skill points.

Step 5 - Traits

1. You can select 3 different traits from the list on the right.
2. Traits affect the gameplay in various ways. For example, the protagonist at the start may have a house, living parents, be a member of some religious group or have more oxygen reserves in certain situations. Selected traits cannot be changed, but some of them can be removed - we discussed this on the FAQ page How to remove traits?.

Step 6 - Name and pronouns

The last step is to name your character. You can:

1. Enter the name - press the E key.
2. Choose pronouns for your character - press the B key.

Pressing the R key will close the creator and resume the prologue.
