Heroes 3 and Online Frags - 10 Best Games of 1999

There may have been fewer games in 1999 starting cult series popular for decades to come, but there was certainly no shortage of timeless hits. Here's our subjective retro list of the top 10 games of 1999.

Silent Hill

  1. Release date: February 23
  2. Developer: Team Silent
  3. Genre: Survival horror
  4. Platform: PlayStation

. . It's worth noting an interesting fact that the term "survival horror" didn't exist at that time. It was referred to as "horror-adventure." The graphics weren't impressive even then, but everything else was on point, especially the atmosphere and plot. The first in a series of the most famous horror games in the history of gaming begins with the story of Harry Mason, who comes to the titular town in search of his missing daughter and must confront a dark cult.

And it was a really strong beginning. While some people called the game a Resident Evil clone, many have already noticed a departure from pure action and jump scares from B-class horror movies towards a greater emphasis on psychological elements, understatement, and a terrifying atmosphere. The game concealed graphical shortcomings with pervasive fog, darkness, and grainy textures, but paradoxically – it further enhanced the remarkable atmosphere of the location and the entire story. While the Silent Hill series achieved fame with its unparalleled sequel, the first installment still holds a top ranking on the list of all-time PlayStation console hits. It is widely regarded as one of the most significant titles in the industry's history.
