Heroes 3 and Online Frags - 10 Best Games of 1999

There may have been fewer games in 1999 starting cult series popular for decades to come, but there was certainly no shortage of timeless hits. Here's our subjective retro list of the top 10 games of 1999.

Heroes 3

  1. Release date: March 3
  2. Developer: New World Computing
  3. Genre: turn-based RPG strategy
  4. Platforms: PC Windows, Linux, Mac

In 1999, the Heroes of Might & Magic series already had an established position on the market. Players almost unanimously loved the formula of exploring the game world, expanding cities, and turn-based combat with an army of creatures straight from myths and legends. The third installment took us to a new land - Erathia - and told the story of Queen Catherine, who was forced to return to her homeland to unite her people in the clash with the dark forces of Nighon and Eofol.

The game provided a familiar gameplay experience, but it was enhanced wherever possible, with the addition of several new features, making it the most flawless installment in this series. Players and critics alike were delighted by the deep and addictive gameplay, which was hard to pull away from. On the other hand, there have been complaints mainly about the uneven pace of the story campaign and technical troubles in the online mode. After the RTS frenzy, HoMM 3 restored faith in the turn-based combat system and showed how addictive it could be. The third installment was expected to win the title of Strategy of the Year, but in the end, it had to acknowledge the superiority of RollerCoaster Tycoon.
