Your first task after starting a new game in Starfield will be a mission called Small Step. It acts as a tutorial to explain the most basic mechanics in the game. In our guide you will learn how to complete all the objectives to complete this task.

One Small Step is the first quest in Starfield, serving as the tutorial. It'll teach you how to move, collect minerals, shoot, fly a spaceship and take part in space combat. On this page of our guide, you'll find a detailed walkthrough of the quest.

Starting the game

1. First off, follow Lin. She'll tell you where you are and what you're about to do. First off, the game will teach you the basic controls.
2. Then, pick up the laser weapon - the cutter, found in a special chest. Equip it and go left, to the smaller part of the cave, where you must extract several Beryllium deposits. Hold the fire button until a notification pops up in the upper-right corner of the screen, letting you know you've extracted some Beryllium. Do the same to the remaining targets.

1. After that, wait for the vehicle to deal with the wall. Once it's down, keep moving forward. Turn on your flashlight to avoid falling into a pit. You'll reach a rock. Hold down the fire button again to extract minerals. Then, interact with the ???.

Character creation

Your next step is character creation. You can use some pre-made options or customize them yourself. You'll also choose your traits and initial skills here. You'll learn more about it on a separate page: Character creator.

First steps on the surface

1. Before you follow Lin, gather the valuable loot in the current area. Look for first aid kits on the walls to acquire necessary aid.
2. Before going to the surface, equip a helmet. After exiting the room, follow Lin and wait for an NPC, Barret, to arrive. Talk to him.
3. Shortly after you'll be attacked by pirates. Grab the weapon near to where Barret's ship landed and kill all the enemies.

1. Loot valuable ammo and weapons off their corpses, then talk to Barret and Lin. No matter what you answer, they'll take you to the ship. After getting a watch, go on deck.

Spaceship tutorial

1. If this is your first playthrough, we recommend first getting familiar with the basic ship controls rather than immediately divert power into all systems.

1. A hostile Crimson Fleet ship will soon appear, lock on to it and shoot it down. Loot its wreckage. Two more enemy ships will spawn, deal with them both.
2. Finally, land on the planet Kreet. You must find a suitable landing site.

Planet Kreet and meeting Brogan

1. Head to the first marker that appears after landing on the planet. If you don't know where to go, use the scanner and follow the arrows.
2. Eliminate the pirates inside the building. Hide behind cover and shoot them when they peek out.

1. Reach the ladder that will take you to the roof. You'll trigger a conversation with the Crimson Fleet's captain, Brogan. You can persuade him Barret is dead and there's nothing valuable to loot on your ship. You can also attack him, but watch out for the pirates near the roof.

1. After talking down Brogan or killing him, go to the Frontier ship and head to the planet Jemison. You'll land in the city of New Atlantis.

New Atlantis and the Lodge

Upon landing in New Atlantis, you'll be greeted by a ship services man. He'll tell you some things about the city and where you can trade. After the conversation, go to the marker.

Once you're there, take the transit railway and head to the MAST district. From there, go to the Lodge. Listen to the people participating in the meeting, put the acquired artifact on the table and talk to Sarah.
